Future Health Leaders Push for a More Preventive Healthcare System

Global health experts explore how data, technology, and community care can help identify health risks earlier and improve population health

New York, 28 September 2026 – Healthcare is increasingly moving beyond treating people after they become sick. At a high-level dialogue held in New York during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, global health leaders discussed how healthcare systems can focus more on prediction, prevention, and early intervention.

The dialogue was convened by Future Health, a global initiative by Abu Dhabi, and brought together ministers, senior government representatives, and healthcare leaders from several countries. The discussions focused on practical ways to transform healthcare systems and make preventive care available to larger populations.

A major focus of the meeting was the use of population health data to identify risks at an earlier stage. Leaders also highlighted the importance of financing preventive healthcare, building strong healthcare delivery systems, and creating trusted services that can reach people within their communities.

Technology and data were identified as important tools in this transformation. Examples discussed included life course screening, the integration of demographic, clinical, and genomic data, and digital records that can support community health workers. Decentralized healthcare services were also highlighted as a way to bring care closer to people.

The discussion made clear that technology alone cannot improve health outcomes. Factors such as affordability, access to screening, referral services, nutrition, physical activity, and the environment in which people live and work also influence long-term health. Addressing these areas can help healthcare systems move from simply responding to illness toward preventing health problems before they become serious.

Abu Dhabi shared its experience through its Healthy Living Strategy, which brings together health data, life sciences, government initiatives, communities, workplaces, and schools. The approach focuses on making healthier choices easier in everyday life, including better opportunities for nutrition and physical activity.

The discussions also emphasized the importance of moving successful healthcare innovations beyond small pilot projects and into population-scale programs. Strong community infrastructure and accessible services can help ensure that early intervention reaches more people.

The Future Health dialogue reflects a broader shift toward preventive healthcare, where data, digital health, screening, and community-based services work together to support healthier populations. The conversation will continue at the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, scheduled for October 20 to 22, 2026.
